Discover Burgazada: The Quiet Gem of the Princes’ Islands

Burgazada, the third largest island in the Sea of Marmara, is often one of the least visited islands by international tourists. However, this peaceful island has a unique charm and character that makes it truly special. With a diameter of around 2 km, Burgazada is small enough to explore easily on foot, offering visitors a relaxing and authentic island experience.

Contrary to what many people think, Burgazada is incredibly charming and full of character. The moment you arrive, you may notice that the atmosphere feels different from the busier islands. The quiet streets, friendly locals, and simple island life create a unique emotional connection for visitors.

A Historic Island with a Sailing Tradition

In ancient times, Burgazada was also known as a fishing island. Even today, the island remains a popular stop for sailing boats crossing the Marmara Sea. During the summer months, many sailors and visitors stop here to enjoy the island’s famous fish restaurants and relax by the sea.

Burgazada is also located along important sailing routes, making it a favorite place for sailors to anchor and take a peaceful break.

Although a large forest fire in 2003 damaged more than half of the island’s wooded areas, Burgazada has preserved its natural beauty and calm atmosphere. Today, visitors can still enjoy nature, sea views, and peaceful walking routes around the island.

Exploring Burgazada: A Suggested Walking Route

If you follow the route we recommend, you can discover some of the island’s most beautiful spots.

When you arrive at the pier, you will see several restaurants along the coastline on your left. A great way to start your island visit is with a coffee at Ergün Patisserie, located just in front of the square. After enjoying your coffee while watching the peaceful life of Burgazada’s small bazaar, you can begin your walk towards the Çamakya area on the right side.

Visitors who prefer cycling can also rent a bicycle from rental shops along the road and explore the island comfortably.

The walk toward Çamakya offers beautiful sea views and peaceful surroundings. After about 20 minutes, you will reach the famous Madam Marta Beach, a beautiful bay named after a woman who lived on the island in the 1960s. This bay is known for its natural beauty and relaxed atmosphere. The small beach here operates in harmony with nature, and spending time here almost feels like stepping back into the 1990s.

After relaxing and enjoying the peaceful environment, you can continue your walk toward Kalpazan Kaya.

Kalpazan Kaya: The Island’s Sunset Point

After another 10-minute walk, you will arrive at Kalpazan Kaya, one of the most interesting historical spots on the island. Along the way, you may notice old houses and former horse stables from the period when horse-drawn carriages were used for transportation on the islands.

The name Kalpazan Kaya, which means “Counterfeit Rock,” comes from the Byzantine period, when counterfeit coins were allegedly produced in this area.

Today, this location is considered one of the best viewpoints on Burgazada. You can relax with a drink at Kalpazan Kaya Restaurant, which has been operated by the same family for three generations. It is also one of the most beautiful places in Istanbul to watch the sunset over the Marmara Sea.

Discovering Local Culture

On your way back toward the center, you can explore different streets such as Mehtap Street, which feels like something out of a novel with its quiet houses and charming atmosphere.

Before finishing your tour, you can visit the house of the famous Turkish writer Sait Faik Abasıyanık, which has been turned into a museum. You may also want to see Hagia Yani Church, a historic church that dates back to the 9th century.

Dining on Burgazada

To finish your island day with a memorable dinner, one of the most recommended places is Barba Yani Restaurant. This traditional Greek tavern was founded in the early 2000s by a former Istanbul Greek tavern owner named Yani. The restaurant is famous for its delicious appetizers, fresh seafood, and beautiful sea views facing Heybeliada and Kaşıkadası.

After dinner, many visitors enjoy stopping for ice cream at Sinem Dondurmacısı. Their mastic-flavored ice cream is especially popular among locals.

Accommodation on Burgazada

Burgazada has only a few hotel options compared to other islands. However, visitors who want to stay overnight can consider Pyrgos Hotel or explore additional accommodation options through Airbnb.

If you plan to return to Istanbul the same day, make sure not to miss the last ferry departure from the island.
