Discover Heybeliada: The Peaceful Island of the Princes’ Archipelago
Heybeliada is the second-largest island of the Princes' Islands in the Sea of Marmara. The island gets its name from its distinctive shape, which resembles a saddlebag formed by two hills with a valley between them. In ancient times, copper was mined here, and because of this, some historical sources refer to Heybeliada as the “Copper Island.”
Although it is not as famous as Büyükada, Heybeliada is a favorite destination for many visitors thanks to its natural beauty, peaceful atmosphere, and rich history.
Historical and Cultural Highlights
Heybeliada is home to several important historical landmarks. One of the most famous is the historic Halki Seminary, which dates back to the 8th century and is one of the most significant religious institutions in the region.
Another notable place is the house where İsmet İnönü once lived, which today operates as a museum. Visitors interested in Turkish literature can also visit the Hüseyin Rahmi Gürpınar House Museum, where the famous writer spent many years of his life.
The island is also home to the historic Turkish Naval Academy, an important naval education institution that has existed since the 18th century.
Nature and Scenic Areas
Heybeliada is well known for its peaceful streets, charming wooden mansions from the late Ottoman period, and beautiful pine forests. Walking through these quiet streets offers visitors a glimpse into the island’s elegant past.
One of the most popular nature spots is Değirmenburnu Nature Park, a scenic area surrounded by pine trees that offers wonderful picnic spots, walking paths, and relaxing sea views.
Visitors can also enjoy the beautiful German Bay, which is famous for its panoramic views and calm atmosphere.
Restaurants and Local Food
Although Heybeliada may not have as many restaurants as Büyükada, there are still several pleasant places to enjoy a meal.
One popular option is Neşeli Restaurant, located in the island center, where you can enjoy traditional Turkish dishes and seafood. Another good choice is Başak Meat & Fish Restaurant, which offers fresh seafood and grilled specialties.
After your meal, don’t forget to try ice cream at Sinem Ice Cream Shop, located just across from the Şehir Hatları ferry pier. Their mastic-flavored ice cream is especially popular with visitors.
Beaches of Heybeliada
While Büyükada is more developed in terms of hotels and restaurants, many locals believe that Heybeliada actually has the best beaches among the Princes’ Islands.
One of the most popular beaches is Cevahir Aqua Beach, which offers clean water, relaxing sunbathing areas, and a great summer atmosphere. During the warm months, it is considered one of the best seaside escapes close to Istanbul.
How to Reach Heybeliada
Heybeliada can easily be reached by ferry from several locations in Istanbul. The most common departure points include:
-
Kabataş and Eminönü on the European side
-
Kadıköy, Bostancı, Maltepe, and Kartal on the Asian side
