Princes’ Islands Travel Guide: Everything You Should Know Before Visiting

Before planning your trip, we recommend learning a little about the beautiful Princes' Islands, one of the most peaceful destinations near Istanbul.

Located in the Sea of Marmara, the Princes’ Islands are an archipelago consisting of nine islands. Among them, four islands have permanent settlements and are open to visitors:

  • Büyükada – the largest and most popular island

  • Heybeliada – known for its nature and peaceful atmosphere

  • Burgazada – famous for its fishing culture and quiet streets

  • Kınalıada – the closest island to Istanbul

The remaining islands — Sedef Island, Tavşan Island, Sivriada, Kaşık Island, and Yassıada — do not have permanent residential communities.

Today, the islands are governed by the Adalar Municipality and the Adalar District Governorate.

A Brief History of the Princes’ Islands

Throughout history, the islands have been known by different names and have played an important role in the region.

After the conquest of Constantinople by Mehmed II, many monasteries on the islands were closed and the settlements were temporarily evacuated.

Later, following the proclamation of the Tanzimat Edict, the islands began to develop again and became a popular residential and summer destination.

Regular ferry transportation to the islands started in 1846, while the Adalar Municipality was officially established in 1861.

Why Visit the Princes’ Islands?

Today, the Princes’ Islands are one of the most popular escapes from the busy city life of Istanbul. Thanks to their peaceful atmosphere, historical mansions, beautiful beaches, and lush nature, the islands attract both local and international visitors.

During the spring and summer months, thousands of people visit the islands to:

  • swim in the clear waters of the Marmara Sea

  • enjoy fresh island air

  • explore historical mansions and monasteries

  • cycle through quiet, car-free streets

  • spend a relaxing day away from the crowds of Istanbul

Among all the islands, Büyükada and Heybeliada are the most popular destinations for tourists.

One of the most famous landmarks on Büyükada is the historic Aya Yorgi Church, which offers spectacular panoramic views of the Marmara Sea.
